Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has welcomed the conviction of Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based pro-Biafra agitator, who was sentenced by a Finnish court to six years in prison for terrorism-related offenses.

The judgment, delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court on September 1, 2025, found Ekpa guilty of participating in a terrorist organization, public incitement to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, aggravated tax fraud, and violations of Finland’s Lawyers Act. The court determined that between 2021 and 2024, Ekpa used his social media platforms to incite violence in southeastern Nigeria, supported armed separatist groups, and financed their operations.

Following the ruling, General Musa described the outcome as a landmark victory in the international effort to combat violent extremism. He stressed that those responsible for sponsoring or promoting terrorism against Nigeria would face justice no matter where they are located. According to him, the case illustrates how cross-border collaboration can ensure accountability for individuals who incite violence from abroad.

Musa commended Nigeria’s security, intelligence, and diplomatic agencies for their cooperation with Finnish authorities, noting that evidence provided from Nigeria contributed to the conviction. He emphasized that the decision sent a strong signal to groups and individuals financing or instigating unrest in the country.

International media have also highlighted the significance of the ruling. The Guardian reported that the court concluded Ekpa

used his social media reach to incite violence in Nigeria’s southeast and provided financial and material support to armed separatist groups.

Similarly, The Cable stated that the conviction was historic because it showed

there is no safe haven for those who foment violence against Nigeria, even from abroad.

Ekpa, a lawyer and former athlete who has been a vocal critic of the Nigerian government, has long been accused of promoting unrest in the southeast through sit-at-home directives and inflammatory broadcasts. His conviction in Finland marks the first time a European court has jailed a foreign-based agitator for terrorism-related crimes tied directly to Nigeria.

General Musa said the verdict was not only a victory for Nigeria but also for global security cooperation, noting that terrorism often crosses borders and requires unified responses. He reiterated that the Nigerian military remains committed to safeguarding the nation while working with international partners to dismantle networks that fuel instability.

The case is being viewed as a precedent for addressing foreign-based sponsors of violence. Analysts say the judgment underscores the importance of international legal cooperation in tackling threats that undermine peace and stability in Nigeria and other regions facing separatist violence.

With Ekpa’s sentencing, authorities in both Finland and Nigeria have signaled a shared determination to ensure that those who instigate terrorism will be held accountable regardless of geography.
