U.S. MILITARY DRAFTS AIRSTRIKE PLANS FOR NIGERIA FOLLOWING TRUMP DIRECTIVE

The United States military has drafted contingency plans for potential airstrikes in Nigeria, according to a report from The New York Times confirmed by defense officials. The planning was initiated following a direct order from President Donald Trump, who instructed the Pentagon to prepare to intervene against terrorist threats targeting Christian communities.

The directive originated from a November 2 post by President Trump on his Truth Social platform. In response, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth formally tasked U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) with developing military options, which have since been submitted to the Pentagon as a graded set of contingency plans.

Three Tiers of Military Options

Officials familiar with the classified documents outline three primary courses of action:

1. Light Option:
Enhanced "partner-enabled operations" featuring increased intelligence sharing, training, and advisory support to Nigerian security forces. This option faces complications due to longstanding U.S. restrictions on certain arms sales to Nigeria over human rights concerns.

2. Medium Option:
Targeted drone strikes against militant camps and convoys using M-9 Reaper and MQ-1 Predator aircraft. This approach faces significant logistical challenges following the loss of critical U.S. drone bases in neighboring Niger, which are now reportedly occupied by Russian forces.

3. Heavy Option:
Deployment of a carrier strike group and long-range bombers for a substantial show of force. Military officials have expressed skepticism about this option's feasibility, noting carrier groups are already committed to other global priorities and that such an operation is not considered a "2025 national security priority."

Official Reactions and Strategic Concerns

The potential for U.S. military intervention has drawn sharp criticism from multiple quarters.

Nigerian officials have pushed back strongly against both the threat of intervention and its underlying justification. In an official statement, the Nigerian government asserted it "welcomes U.S. assistance" but emphasized that any external action must "respect Nigeria's sovereignty." The statement further challenged the characterization of the conflict as primarily religious, noting their security forces confront violence affecting all citizens.

Within U.S. military circles, the plans have been met with significant skepticism. One retired general, speaking to The New York Times on condition of anonymity, characterized a potential large-scale operation as likely to "be a fiasco," suggesting limited airstrikes would prove largely ineffective.

Complex Reality of Nigerian Conflict

The situation on the ground reveals a more complicated picture than the religious persecution narrative suggests. While extremist groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have indeed targeted Christian communities, they have also attacked Muslim populations that reject their extremist ideology.

According to data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), a crisis monitoring group,

the violence encompasses multiple drivers including criminal banditry, resource conflicts between farmers and herders, and ethnic militancy. Of 1,923 documented attacks on civilian targets in Nigeria this year, only 50 were directly linked to Christian identity, indicating the multifaceted nature of the security crisis.
