ABUJA, Nigeria – A tense standoff between political power and military authority unfolded publicly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, as the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, engaged in a heated verbal exchange with personnel of the Nigerian Navy over a disputed parcel of land.

The incident, which was captured on video and has since gone viral across social media platforms, occurred in the Gaduwa District of Abuja. Minister Wike, accompanied by officials from the FCT Administration, had arrived at the site, known as Plot 1946, to inspect ongoing development. However, their access was blocked by naval personnel who were stationed on the land.

The Confrontation: A Clash of Wills and Words

Eyewitness accounts and video footage depict a rapidly escalating situation. The minister, known for his combative style, immediately demanded to see the documents authorizing the construction on the plot. When the naval officer on site reportedly failed to produce any, Wike accused the military of using uniformed personnel to shield an illegal development.

The exchange grew increasingly personal and volatile. In a moment that has become the signature of the clash, Wike was recorded insulting the officer, stating, “You are a big fool… I am here, and you are talking to me anyhow. You are a big fool, you this one.” The officer, standing his ground, retorted, “I am not a fool, sir,” a rare public pushback against a high-ranking civilian official.

Wike later defended his actions, stating that his visit was prompted by reports that FCT officials, who had initially attempted to inspect the site, were chased away by soldiers. He framed the confrontation as a matter of principle and the rule of law.

I will not, for any reason, succumb to blackmail or intimidation,
Wike asserted during a press briefing following the incident, as reported by Premium Times.
That is why I went there this morning to see things for myself and indeed I saw things for myself.

The Core of the Dispute: Legality and Land Allocation

The heart of the conflict lies in the legitimacy of the development. The FCT Administration, under Wike's directive, claims the construction is illegal and not in alignment with the Abuja Master Plan. The Minister has made the restoration of this master plan a cornerstone of his tenure, leading to a aggressive crackdown on buildings and lands deemed to have been illegally allocated or developed.

On the other side, the military personnel involved claimed they were acting on lawful orders. The naval officer at the scene insisted that the land was legally acquired, telling the minister he was acting

on the instruction of a former chief of naval staff,
according to a detailed account by The Cable.

However, this claim has been met with skepticism from transparency advocates. A report from Sahara Reporters added another layer to the controversy, citing sources that alleged Wike had

revoked the 30 hectares of land initially allocated to military personnel in the same Gaduwa District for the proposed Naval Command
and reallocated the prime property to his own political associates. This allegation, if proven true, suggests the dispute is part of a wider, more complex battle over valuable land in the FCT.

Fallout and Reactions

In the aftermath of the public altercation, Wike confirmed that he had escalated the matter to the highest levels of the military command. “I have spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff,” he stated, expressing confidence that the military leadership would address the issue within their ranks.

The incident has sparked a significant public discourse, with opinions divided on the minister's approach. While some laud his audacity in confronting a powerful institution like the military over land grabbing, others have criticized his use of inflammatory language. Former Senator Shehu Sani voiced a cautionary perspective on his social media handle, advising Wike to “avoid stunts with soldiers."
