In a brazen attack that shattered the peace of the New Year's Eve celebration, gunmen stormed the palace of a traditional ruler in Kwara State, abducting the monarch and his son while shooting his wife. The violent incident, occurring on the evening of Wednesday, December 31, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the community and heightened concerns over rural insecurity.

The assault targeted the palace of Oba Simeon Olaonipekun, the Aniwo 1 of Aafin community in the Ifelodun Local Government Area. According to a detailed family account published by The Punch on Thursday, January 1, 2026, the invasion began around 8:00 PM. A family source present during the ordeal reported that approximately eight armed men forcibly entered the palace.

They came in around 8 pm and went straight to the place where the king and his son were,
the source stated, describing a scene of chaos and terror.

The gunmen's primary targets were the 70-year-old monarch and one of his sons, Olaolu Olaonipekun, who is a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Both were seized and forcibly taken away to an unknown location by the assailants. The attack turned more violent when the Oba's wife, the Olori, attempted to intervene.

The Olori attempted to save her son from being taken away by the bandits. But she was shot in the hand,
the family witness recounted. The injured queen was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Police Launch Investigation into the Abduction

The Kwara State Police Command officially confirmed the incident and has commenced an investigation. A police spokesperson verified the basic facts on January 1, stating that the monarch and his son were indeed kidnapped from their palace. The spokesperson assured the public that a coordinated effort involving tactical teams and local security networks was underway to track the kidnappers and secure the victims' safe release. The police also confirmed they were actively gathering intelligence and following leads to resolve the case swiftly.

Community Reels from the Shock

The abduction has plunged the Aafin community into a state of fear and anxiety. The palace, traditionally a symbol of security and authority, becoming the epicenter of such violence has deeply unsettled residents. The incident casts a pall over the new year and underscores the persistent security challenges facing rural communities, where traditional rulers have increasingly found themselves targeted by criminal elements.

This attack in Ifelodun LGA is particularly alarming as it follows a troubling pattern in the region. While the immediate police focus is on the events of December 31, the local context includes a recent history of similar crimes. As noted in the January 1 report from The Punch, the area witnessed another high-profile abduction just over a month prior, when

a first-class monarch in the same local government area was kidnapped but later released after a ransom was paid.
This precedent adds to the community's distress and raises urgent questions about the protection of citizens and traditional institutions.

The New Year's Eve attack on Oba Simeon Olaonipekun's palace stands as a stark reminder of the volatile security situation in parts of Nigeria. As the nation entered 2026, the plight of the abducted monarch and his son, alongside the recovery of the wounded Olori, became a focal point for concerns over lawlessness. The effectiveness of the ongoing police operation will be closely watched by a grieving and apprehensive community hoping for their leader's safe return.
