A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday in the Independence Layout area of Enugu State, as a suspected vandal was electrocuted while attempting to steal valuable equipment from a critical electricity distribution substation.

The incident occurred at the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation, located along Independence Avenue. According to an official statement from the power distribution company, the yet-to-be-identified man met his death after power was suddenly restored to the facility while he was in the middle of the theft.

Confirming the incident to the press, the Head of Communications for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), Mr. Emeka Ezeh, described the event as unfortunate but avoidable. He stated that the deceased and his accomplices had successfully vandalized parts of the substation before the fatal accident occurred.

The unfortunate incident happened in the early hours of today, Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at our Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation on Independence Avenue, Independence Layout, Enugu,
Mr. Ezeh said.

He provided a detailed account of how the incident transpired, explaining that the vandals had already made away with some equipment before the power surge hit. "The deceased and his gang had succeeded in loosening and stealing two intermediate cables. He was in the process of removing a third cable when power supply was restored to the facility, leading to his electrocution," Ezeh explained.

The spokesperson noted that upon the restoration of power, the suspect was instantly electrocuted. His accomplices, however, managed to escape the scene, fleeing with the two cables already stolen. Their current whereabouts remain unknown, and a manhunt is likely underway.

Following the discovery of the body by MEDL security personnel and residents, the Nigeria Police Force was quickly alerted. Officers arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation and evacuate the remains. "His body has been removed by the Nigeria Police and deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) morgue for autopsy and identification," Mr. Ezeh confirmed.

In his statement, the MEDL Communications Head expressed deep concern over the persistent vandalism of power infrastructure in the region. He emphasized that such acts not only endanger the lives of the perpetrators but also lead to widespread power outages, costing the company millions in repairs and subjecting law-abiding customers to unnecessary darkness and economic hardship.

Mr. Ezeh hopes that this tragic death will serve as a stark warning to others involved in the criminal enterprise of infrastructure vandalism. "We hope that this tragic incident will serve as a strong deterrent to others who engage in the vandalism of electricity assets," he stated.

Electricity infrastructure vandalism has been a persistent challenge in Nigeria, leading to the collapse of the national grid in some instances and significant financial losses for power distribution companies. This incident highlights the extreme dangers associated with tampering with high-voltage equipment. The police have launched an investigation to track down the fleeing accomplices.
