In a meticulously coordinated security operation on Monday, 25 May 2026, a combined team of police operatives, local hunters, and allied security agencies successfully neutralised three suspected kidnappers and secured the release of an abducted individual in Otu, a community situated within the Oke-Ogun axis of Oyo State.
The chain of events was set in motion when a contingent of local hunters, undertaking a routine patrol of the area’s extensive forests, was subjected to an unprovoked armed assault. A group of kidnappers, lying in ambush, opened fire upon the hunters without prior warning. Rather than retreating, the hunters exhibited commendable resolve by returning fire, sustaining the engagement, and simultaneously transmitting an urgent request for reinforcement.
Upon receiving the distress communication, the Divisional Police Officer with jurisdiction over the locality promptly mobilised a multi-agency response force. The assembled team, comprising additional police personnel, members of a local vigilante group, and further detachments of the hunters’ association, proceeded expeditiously to the scene of the confrontation. The security contingent penetrated deep into the forested terrain where they encountered and engaged the criminal elements. The ensuing exchange of gunfire was intense and sustained. When hostilities ceased, three of the suspected kidnappers had been fatally wounded. The remnants of the gang are believed to have fled into the dense undergrowth, reportedly bearing gunshot injuries.
Regrettably, one member of the hunters’ group sustained a gunshot wound during the confrontation. He was evacuated without delay and is presently receiving medical care at a healthcare facility, where his condition is being closely monitored. Subsequent to the neutralisation of the assailants, the security team conducted a thorough search of the immediate vicinity and uncovered a rudimentary encampment serving as the kidnappers’ hideout. Within this camp, the team discovered a bound and visibly distressed individual, later identified as Mosudi Gbolagade, a 50-year-old resident who had previously been abducted from his residence in the Okaka community. The victim was immediately extricated and conveyed to a medical institution for treatment of injuries sustained during his period of unlawful detention. The announcement of his safe return was met with profound relief and celebration among his family and the wider Okaka community.
Following a detailed sweep of the camp and the deceased suspects, the security operatives recovered a cache of armaments. The items seized, as officially confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, included one AK-47 assault rifle, one locally fabricated single-barrel firearm, and a machete. The presence of a military-grade weapon such as the AK-47 underscores the level of threat posed by this criminal syndicate and highlights the significance of its removal from circulation.
In a formal statement, DSP Olayinka reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Oyo State Police Command to the eradication of criminality across the state. "The Command remains resolute in its mandate to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens. We are deploying all lawful means and resources to achieve this objective," the spokesperson stated. He further disclosed that the rescued victim, now in a stable condition, is assisting investigators with information critical to the ongoing manhunt for the fugitive members of the gang.
The Commissioner of Police conveyed his official commendation for the gallantry and professionalism displayed by both the police personnel and the local hunters who participated in the operation. He urged the citizenry to continue providing actionable and timely intelligence, emphasising that such collaboration is indispensable to the preemptive neutralisation of criminal threats.
The Oke-Ogun region, characterised by expansive forests and agricultural settlements, has in recent periods experienced episodes of abduction that have generated considerable public concern. The decisive action undertaken on Monday, which effectively fused the indigenous knowledge of community hunters with the professional capabilities of the formal police apparatus, is being recognised as a potent demonstration of effective community policing. Security analysts have observed that the elimination of three gunmen, combined with the seizure of a sophisticated firearm, constitutes a significant operational setback for criminal networks operating along that corridor.
As the pursuit of the fleeing suspects continues with heightened intensity, the police have advised residents of Otu and adjacent communities to maintain a high state of vigilance.
