In Lagos State, the arrest of six individuals for vandalising a government barricade at Obalende Round About has once again brought to light the troubling issue of infrastructure destruction. Government properties are built to serve the people, yet some individuals have chosen to destroy them, disrupting order, safety, and development. This act not only endangers the well-being of road users but also wastes resources that could be better directed toward improving the city.
The arrested suspects were identified as Matthew Yohana, 19, Jinadu Aliyu, 33, Yohanna Adamu, 29, Ayuba James, 25, Umoru John, 19, and Yakubu Ali, 25. Their actions at Obalende Round About, one of the busiest junctions in Lagos, posed serious risks to both motorists and pedestrians. Barricades at such locations are designed to control traffic, prevent accidents, and enhance safety. Destroying them not only disrupts these functions but also signals a disregard for the collective welfare of society.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, strongly condemned the act, stating,
All arrested individuals will be prosecuted in line with the relevant extant law of the state.
His words highlight that there are legal consequences for such destructive behavior, and those who engage in it will be held accountable. The law does not take vandalism lightly, and individuals who think otherwise risk facing fines, imprisonment, or both.
This incident should serve as a reminder to the youth and citizens at large that vandalism is not a form of expression or protest. Instead, it reflects poor judgment and a lack of respect for the community. Instead of damaging what belongs to everyone, young people should see government infrastructure as an investment for their benefit. Roads, barricades, and public facilities are meant to make life easier and safer. Destroying them means setting back progress and wasting taxpayer money.
Wahab further stressed the importance of public awareness when he said,
It is high time we all began to take full ownership of public utilities provided with taxpayers’ money.
These facilities do not belong to the government alone; they belong to the people. When they are destroyed, the community suffers as a whole. The mindset of ownership is what every responsible citizen should adopt.
Citizens must also understand that the government alone cannot ensure the safety of all infrastructure without public cooperation. Protecting public facilities requires vigilance, reporting suspicious activities, and spreading awareness about the dangers of vandalism. One of the strongest statements made in relation to the case came from Wahab, who added,
Those arrested will serve as a deterrent to others who think they can destroy government property without consequences.This emphasizes that beyond punishment, there is a wider lesson that vandalism will not be tolerated in Lagos State.
For Nigerian youths in particular, this should be a turning point. There are better avenues to channel energy, creativity, and even grievances. Community service, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement are all productive ways to contribute to society. Vandalism does the opposite—it erodes development and paints a negative picture of young people as lawbreakers instead of nation-builders.
Ultimately, the arrests at Obalende Round About are not just about punishing six individuals. They should be taken as a broader call to action for all citizens to value and protect public infrastructure. Development in Lagos can only thrive when the community works hand in hand with the government. By respecting public property, citizens not only obey the law but also ensure that facilities remain available and functional for everyone.
