The nation teeters on the brink of a severe electricity crisis as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a stern ultimatum to the federal government, threatening to plunge the entire country into a blackout. This drastic action is in response to an alleged violent attack and abduction of its members by armed police officers at a critical power infrastructure site in Imo State.
The tense standoff originated from an incident reported on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Owerri, Imo State. According to the union, the facility was forcibly invaded by police officers who allegedly assaulted staff, held them hostage, and vandalized equipment. The union further claimed that some of its members were abducted and taken to an unknown location.
In a swift and decisive response, the NUEE directed its members to immediately withdraw their services and shut down power supply operations across Imo State. This action has already resulted in a total blackout within the state, crippling economic and social activities.
However, the union has signaled that this is merely a precursor to a more extensive shutdown. In a statement, the NUEE issued a list of non-negotiable demands to the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Inspector General of Police. The union threatened that failure to meet these demands would result in a
total and indefinite nationwide withdrawal of services.
The specific demands, as outlined by the union, include:
• The immediate and unconditional release of any abducted staff members.
• A formal written undertaking from the authorities guaranteeing the safety and protection of electricity workers at their workplaces.
• The replacement of all staff property damaged or stolen during the incident, including phones and laptops.
• The provision of comprehensive medical care for all assaulted workers.
The situation is exacerbated by a conflicting narrative from the police. The Imo State Police Command has denied the union's account of events, describing the incident not as an attack but as an "operational disagreement." Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, stated that the incident involved a dispute between the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the Orashi Electricity Distribution Company. He denied allegations of abduction, asserting that an investigation was ongoing to resolve the matter.
This latest crisis unfolds against a backdrop of pre-existing industrial unrest within the power sector. As reported by Premium Times in September 2025, the NUEE had already issued a separate 14-day strike notice to the TCN management over unresolved issues, including
the failure to liquidate the payment of the entitlement of ex-staff of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in line with the agreement reached.
The potential for a nationwide strike is not an empty threat. The Nigerian electricity grid is notoriously fragile, and a coordinated withdrawal of labour by the NUEE, which represents the critical technical staff that manage the national grid, would lead to an instantaneous collapse of power supply across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The implications of such a shutdown would be catastrophic. Hospitals would be forced to rely on emergency generators, businesses would grind to a halt, water supply systems would fail, and security would be compromised. The economic cost would run into billions of Naira daily.
As the ultimatum clock ticks, the nation holds its breath. The ball is now in the court of the government and security agencies to engage in urgent dialogue with the union leadership to de-escalate the situation. The resolution of this conflict hinges on their ability to address the workers' grievances regarding safety and to provide verifiable evidence regarding the well-being of the allegedly abducted staff. For millions of Nigerians, the hope is that a swift and peaceful resolution is found before the lights go out nationwide.
