The People's Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria's main opposition party, descended into unprecedented chaos on Tuesday as rival factions engaged in a violent physical confrontation at its national headquarters, culminating in police firing tear gas and the subsequent shutdown of the building.
The dramatic scenes at Wadata Plaza in the heart of the nation's capital exposed the deep-seated leadership crisis tearing the party apart, a mere stone's throw from the seat of national power.
The Powder Keg: A Battle for the Soul of the PDP
The immediate trigger for the brawl was the fallout from a parallel national convention held over the weekend. On November 15-16, a faction led by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State convened a national convention in Ibadan. There, they elected Kabiru Turaki as the new National Chairman and took the drastic step of expelling high-profile members, including the formidable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the party's National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
This faction, henceforth known as the "Turaki/Makinde" camp, declared their convention legitimate and their newly elected executives as the party's lawful leadership.
The opposing "Wike/Anyanwu" faction swiftly rejected these actions. Citing existing party structures and supportive court orders, they declared the Ibadan convention null and void. In a retaliatory move, they held their own meeting and announced the expulsion of Governors Makinde, Mohammed, and other members of the rival executive.
This set the stage for a direct and inevitable clash, with both groups claiming control over the party's nerve center—the National Secretariat.
The Confrontation Erupts
The crisis came to a head on the morning of Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Supporters and key figures from both factions descended upon Wadata Plaza, each determined to assert their authority.
The situation turned tense early when Governors Makinde and Bala Mohammed arrived at the secretariat, only to find the gates locked and access blocked by security personnel. Forced to abandon their vehicles, the two governors proceeded on foot, a powerful image of the institutional breakdown.
As their supporters massed outside, the atmosphere grew increasingly volatile. The situation escalated further when the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, arrived at the scene. Reports from on-the-ground journalists described a heated standoff. According to Premium Times,
the situation deteriorated when Mr. Wike reportedly blocked the motorcade of the governors, leading to a shouting match and jostling among their security details and supporters.
The already fraught environment then exploded. In an attempt to disperse the clashing crowds and prevent a full-scale riot, the Nigeria Police Force intervened with tear gas. Canisters were fired indiscriminately, sending governors, aides, journalists, and party loyalists scrambling for cover, their eyes stinging and lungs burning.
An eyewitness account from The Punch corroborated the scene, stating,
Police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowds, affecting everyone including the governors and journalists who were covering the event. The secretariat premises was turned into a battlefield, with people running helter-skelter.
Aftermath and National Secretariat Shutdown
The immediate aftermath of the brawl saw the PDP's headquarters effectively paralyzed. The following day, November 19, the Nigeria Police Force made the decisive move to seal the building entirely.
A statement from the Force Public Relations Officer justified the action as necessary
to prevent a further breakdown of law and order and to allow for a thorough investigation.The iconic Wadata Plaza, a symbol of the party that once governed Nigeria for 16 years, now stands as a monument to its internal disarray, its gates chained and under armed guard.
A Party at a Crossroads
This violent incident is more than a mere scuffle; it is a symptom of a profound identity crisis within the PDP. The power struggle, fundamentally between the old guard and a new wave of influential governors, with the ever-combative Nyesom Wike at the center, has now escalated from boardrooms and courtrooms to the streets.
The shutdown of its national secretariat is a profound embarrassment for the opposition, raising serious questions about its ability to govern itself, let alone the country. As the dust settles—both literally and metaphorically—the path to reconciliation for the PDP appears long and fraught with difficulty, casting a long shadow over Nigeria's political landscape. The party now faces the monumental task of healing its self-inflicted wounds before it can present a credible alternative to the Nigerian electorate.
