A Nigerian Federal High Court has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment. Justice James Omotosho delivered the verdict on November 20, finding Kanu guilty on all seven counts of terrorism and treasonable felony.
The courtroom proceedings were tumultuous, with Kanu being removed for "unruly" behavior after challenging the court's authority. The judgment was ultimately delivered in his absence.
Prosecutors had argued that Kanu's broadcasts and leadership of the banned IPOB group incited violence, leading to deadly enforcement of stay-at-home orders in the Southeast. They had previously sought the death penalty. However, Justice Omotosho stated he chose to "temper justice with mercy," imposing a life term instead.
