In a new attempt to break the deadlock over detained Biafra activist Nnamdi Kanu, a well-known spiritual figure, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has stepped forward. He says he is willing to help secure Kanu's release, but only if Kanu's group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), agrees to some major changes.
The offer was made during an interview on his own religious radio station on December 3, 2025. He is essentially proposing a trade: IPOB stops its most disruptive activities, and he will work behind the scenes to get their leader out of prison through a "political settlement."
What Exactly Does He Want IPOB to Do?
Maharaj Ji's conditions are very specific and target the main tools IPOB uses:
1. Shut Down Biafra Radio:
He wants them to stop all broadcasts from "Biafra radio wherever it is." This is a big demand because this radio station, originally founded by Kanu from London, has been the main voice for the Biafra movement. The Nigerian government even used its broadcasts as key evidence to convict Kanu for incitement.
2. End the Sit-at-Home Orders:
He demands an end to the forced lockdowns, or "sit-at-home" orders, that are often enforced in Nigeria's southeastern states. These orders, which tell everyone to stay home, have severely hurt the local economy, closed schools, and created a climate of fear. While IPOB's leaders sometimes cancel the orders, many people still stay home out of fear of violence from enforcers.
3. Accept the Court's Ruling and Change the Message:
He also says supporters must accept the court's judgment that found Kanu guilty. Additionally, he wants an end to propaganda claiming the government is trying to "Islamize" the predominantly Christian Igbo people of the southeast.
Where Things Stand with Nnamdi Kanu
This offer comes at a critical time. Right now, Nnamdi Kanu is in prison serving a life sentence. In late November 2025, a Nigerian court found him guilty of terrorism charges. It's important to note that the prosecutors had originally asked for the death penalty.
His legal team is fighting the conviction, calling it unfair and political. However, unless they win an appeal, the only ways out for Kanu are a pardon from the President or a political deal like the one Maharaj Ji is suggesting.
Why This Offer Matters
Maharaj Ji isn't the only one talking about a political solution. The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has also been working quietly to find a way to free Kanu, believing it's necessary for true peace in the region.
However, there are major hurdles:
• No Official Power:
Maharaj Ji is a influential community leader, but he doesn't have the official authority to release anyone. He can only try to persuade and negotiate.
• IPOB's Stance is Unclear:
As of now, IPOB has not publicly responded to this specific offer. In the past, they have demanded Kanu's unconditional release and rejected the court's authority, which directly clashes with Maharaj Ji's condition to accept the court's judgment.
• Government's Firm Stand:
The Nigerian government continues to treat this as a closed legal case, not a political negotiation. They haven't shown any sign of being open to a deal.
In simple terms:
Satguru Maharaj Ji has thrown a potential solution on the table. He's saying, "If you stand down your campaign, I'll try to get your leader out." But for this to work, both IPOB and the government would have to move from their fixed positions and accept a compromise, which seems like a very difficult challenge at the moment.
