In a stunning public rebuke, Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has sharply criticized the "excessively large security battalion" assigned to Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, labeling it as a dangerous blurring of the lines between personal privilege and state power.
The renowned playwright and social critic revealed details of the encounter during a keynote speech at the 20th Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) awards in Lagos on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
A Confrontation at an Ikoyi Hotel
Soyinka narrated a recent personal experience where he witnessed what he described as a disproportionate security detail for the president's son.
I saw an excessively large security battalion assigned to a young individual close to the Presidency,Soyinka told the audience of journalists and dignitaries. With characteristic wit, he added that the entourage was "sufficient to take over a small country."
The academic later identified the young man as Seyi Tinubu. According to Soyinka's account, he counted
at least 15 or so heavily armed to the teethsecurity personnel in the detail, a sight he found deeply alarming for a private citizen without an official government role.

So concerned was Soyinka by the display that he took the extraordinary step of reporting the matter directly to Nigeria's National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. Soyinka's criticism touches on a long-standing and visible issue in Nigerian public life: the culture of massive security convoys and entourages for government officials. He is not alone in this concern. In recent months, Senator Ali Ndume has also publicly criticized the size of security convoys for top officials, including that of the president.
