The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old man for the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl, a neighbour, in the Elebu area of Ibadan. The arrest, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, underscores ongoing concerns about child safety and sexual violence in Nigeria.

According to an official press release dated January 3, 2026, and circulated on the Command’s verified social media channels on January 4, the suspect, identified as Olaitan Oloyede, was apprehended following a report lodged at the Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters. The incident allegedly occurred in the victim's residence, where the suspect, exploiting his proximity and familiarity as a neighbour, committed the act.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Oyo State Command, SP. Adewale Osifeso, stated in the release,

The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that one Olaitan Oloyede ‘m’ 27 years old has been arrested for defiling an 8-year-old girl (name withheld) at Elebu area of Ibadan.
The statement further clarified the operational response, noting,
The arrest of the suspect followed a report lodged at Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters about the incident which happened at the residence of the victim.

The case was immediately transferred to the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a discrete and thorough investigation. SP Osifeso emphasised the Command’s stance, saying, The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP. Oluwafemi O. Oyenike, has directed that the case be charged to court after a diligent investigation to serve as a deterrent to others with such criminal intentions. This directive aligns with the renewed focus on swift justice in cases of gender-based violence, particularly those involving minors.

Child rights advocates have swiftly reacted to the news. A representative from the Cece Yara Foundation, a child-centred advocacy group, noted in a statement on January 4,

This reported case is a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of children, often within their own communities. It reinforces the critical need for continuous community vigilance, child safety education, and robust legal frameworks that ensure swift justice and protect the rights of the survivor.
The Foundation reiterated its call for strengthened support systems for victims and their families during the traumatic judicial process.

The arrest has provoked significant distress and anger within the Elebu community. Local leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity on January 4, expressed outrage over the betrayal of communal trust.

When a neighbour, someone we see every day, is accused of such a heinous act against a child, it shatters the very fabric of our trust. We commend the police for their swift action and demand that the law takes its full course,
one community elder stated.

The Oyo State Police Command used the occasion to reiterate its commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens.

The Command hereby assures the general public of its unwavering commitment to protect the lives and properties of all and sundry, with utmost professionalism and in accordance with extant laws,
the January 3 press release concluded. The police also encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities or threats to child safety through their emergency lines, promising confidentiality and prompt action.

This incident occurs within a broader national context where cases of sexual violence against children frequently make headlines, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws like the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act. The swift police action and transfer for prosecution, as seen in this case, are being closely watched by civil society organizations as a test of the criminal justice system's responsiveness in early 2026.

As of January 5, 2026, the suspect remains in police custody pending the conclusion of the investigation and subsequent arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction. The police have assured the public that updates will be provided as the case progresses through the legal system.
