A serious traffic collision involving two vehicles on the Eko Bridge in Lagos early Sunday morning resulted in one driver being hospitalised, significant vehicle damage and severe traffic congestion across the vital Lagos lagoon crossing.

According to a confirmed traffic update from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, on the Eko Bridge inward toward NEPA. The crash involved a truck and a white car, and one of the vehicles reportedly flipped over in the impact.

Details of the Collision

Authorities say the collision took place on one of Lagos’ busiest corridors, a section of the Eko Bridge that connects Lagos Island with the mainland and handles thousands of commuters each day. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the crash on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, identifying that the two vehicles collided head-on on the inward lane toward the city’s central business district.

The force of the crash was severe enough to cause substantial damage to both vehicles. LASTMA officials described how the white car flipped over, leaving the driver trapped before emergency responders arrived. Although details about the driver’s condition remain limited, LASTMA confirmed he was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Emergency Response and Traffic Impact

FIRST responders, including LASTMA personnel and officers from the Ebute Ero Divisional Police Station, were quickly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and oversee rescue operations.

The driver has been swiftly rushed to the hospital for treatment,
Lagos traffic officials reported in their statement.

Due to the crash, traffic was significantly disrupted on the Eko Bridge, as authorities had to reduce the carriageway to a single lane to allow emergency crews to work safely. The reduction in available roadway caused speed-slowed traffic and long queues, particularly at the Offin Canal intersection leading into the city.

Tow trucks were dispatched to remove the wrecked truck and car, and LASTMA later confirmed that the affected vehicles had been cleared, with expectations of a return to normal traffic flow along the corridor later in the day.

Context: Eko Bridge and Road Safety Concerns

The Eko Bridge spans the Lagos Lagoon and serves as a critical link between Lagos Island and mainland communities. Its importance to daily commuter and commercial traffic means any interruption — especially during morning peak hours — quickly cascades into significant city-wide delays.

Road accidents on this and other major Lagos bridges are, unfortunately, a frequent occurrence. Last year, separate incidents on the same bridge and expressway networks have led to multiple fatalities and emergency responses, underscoring broader road safety challenges in Nigeria’s most populous city.

Experts often cite factors such as high traffic volume, speeding, vehicle condition issues, and inattentive driving as contributors to these frequent collisions. While investigations into this recent accident are ongoing, the circumstances — involving a commercial truck and private car — reflect patterns seen in other Lagos traffic mishaps where larger vehicles are involved in collisions with smaller road users.

LASTMA and Public Advisories

Traffic authorities reiterated the need for motorists to exercise caution, particularly on bridges and at high-traffic points during peak hours. LASTMA’s broader road safety campaigns aim to combine enforcement with public education on safe driving practices.

Motorists were advised to monitor traffic updates, especially as emergency clearances are conducted, and to consider alternate routes when possible to avoid congestion and reduce the risk of secondary collisions.

Ongoing Investigation

While the identity of the injured driver and the full cause of the collision have not yet been released, LASTMA officials noted that an investigation into the precise circumstances of the accident is underway.

Authorities typically examine factors such as vehicle speed, driving behaviour, road conditions, and compliance with safety regulations as part of their formal enquiries. Final reports and findings will likely be released once this process is complete.
