In recent months Zamfara State has endured one of the most brutal waves of violence in its history.
From mass abductions to horrendous killings, armed gangs have inflicted profound suffering on local communities, especially in Kaura Namoda and Tsafe local government areas.
One of the most horrific incidents took place in February 2025 in Banga town, Kaura Namoda LGA. A notorious bandit faction led by Dan Sadiya abducted more than fifty persons from that community. After families paid a ransom of fifty million naira, the captors released only eighteen hostages and inexplicably slaughtered thirty‑three others—including men and women—forcing them to kill one another in captivity before murdering them outright. Three infants born in the camp also died. Counting the two who were killed during the raid, the total number of deaths has been reported as thirty‑eight. Despite full or partial ransom payments, the survivors were released while the majority were executed in cold blood. This atrocity unfolded over several months in captivity and was finally confirmed around July 29 2025.
Just days later, on July 30 2025, the Northern Senators Forum issued a formal condemnation of the Kaura Namoda massacre, detailing that at least thirty‑five civilians had been killed, even after ransom transactions had been completed.
The Forum criticised the recurrence of such violence and called for urgent collaboration between federal security agencies and local vigilante forces, as well as better intelligence sharing to forestall future tragedies.
Earlier in April 2025 further bloodshed struck Tsafe LGA. In apparent reprisal for the killing of several bandit kingpins by security operatives—including a warlord known as Kachalla Yellow (also called Dan Isuhu)—armed gangs loyal to his brother Adamu Aliero launched coordinated attacks. Two villagers were killed, over sixty others abducted and at least forty women seized during raids in Gidan Arne, Keta, Yan Doton Daji, Unguwan Chida and other communities. Shops were looted, vehicles set on fire, and communities terrorised. This marked a clear escalation in retaliation as bandit factions sought vengeance for losses suffered in military operations.
Besides mass abductions, horror stories of extreme cruelty also surfaced. In May 2025 a representative in Nigeria’s House of Representatives from Zamfara, Aminu Jaji, recounted how a pregnant woman was abducted and later gave birth to twins in captivity. The child captor reportedly fed the newborn twins to his dogs. That same lawmaker revealed that in Kaura Namoda alone over 200 violent attacks had taken place across communities including Dayo, Gabaki, Banga and Korea. He said in one raid sixty victims were kidnapped with ransom demands of thirty million naira; ten were reported killed during detention, leaving the remainder's fate uncertain.
These violent incidents sit within a broader context of pervasive insecurity in Zamfara. According to a mid‑2025 report from security analysts Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, Zamfara had recorded approximately 6,800 deaths and 5,400 abductions in the first half of the year across bandit, terrorist, and communal violence—far outpacing any other Nigerian state.
It is clear that this wave of mass kidnappings and killings in Zamfara represents a new low in the state’s security situation. Communities like Banga and Kaura Namoda have been turned into ghost towns as residents flee or endure captivity. The cycle of ransom followed by execution underscores both the cruelty of the bandits and the inefficacy of current counter‑kidnapping efforts.
Despite condemnation from UK government representatives and domestic legislators, little meaningful resolution has followed on the ground. Authorities struggle to protect farming communities, towns, and religious leaders—such as the chief Imam in Maru LGA, who was killed along with three children despite ransom payments earlier in the year.
To date, the security response remains reactive and scattered. Intelligence gaps, coordination failures between law enforcement and military units, and general inadequacy of preventative measures leave many communities vulnerable to nightly raids. The situation demands both kinetic action and deeper peace-building, community engagement, and support for displaced citizens.
The carnage in Zamfara State during early and mid‑2025 has involved multiple waves of mass kidnapping, ransom demands, and calculated massacres even after payments were made.
The violence epitomizes a breakdown of both security architecture and humanitarian norms. Without urgent strategic overhaul and strong collaborative efforts between federal, state agencies, and local communities, more towns risk being consumed by terror. Communities deserve justice, stability, and above all, protection from relentless criminal assaults.
