A wave of fear and confusion has swept through the communities of Apomu, Ikoyi, and Ikire in Osun State, following an unverified rumor alleging the discovery of banditry dens in the Waasimi area, a village situated along the Ikire-Gbongan corridor. The rumor, which began circulating earlier today, has triggered mass panic, leading to the abrupt shutdown of schools, markets, and other essential services, as residents flee or lock themselves indoors.
Waasimi, the focal point of the unsettling claims, is described as a vast, sparsely populated expanse of land predominantly used for farming and cattle grazing. The area is home to both Yoruba farmers and Fulani herders, who have coexisted for generations. Despite its peaceful rural character, the mere suggestion of a bandit hideout within its borders has proven enough to unleash pandemonium in the more populous neighboring towns.
As of the time of this report, Fact Frontier News has not obtained any specific, verifiable evidence confirming the existence of bandit camps or dens in the Waasimi area. Security agencies in Osun State have yet to issue an official statement, and local vigilante groups have not reported any unusual activity. Nevertheless, the psychological impact has been severe. Residents of Apomu, Ikoyi, and Ikire describe a state of siege, with many refusing to venture outdoors.
"No place is safe anymore in Nigeria, even if there has not been a direct banditry attack in our area," lamented Mr. Aminu, a resident who shared his distress with our correspondent. "We are pleading with the Nigerian government to fight this war without looking back, by all means necessary. We cannot continue to live in this constant fear."
The disruption has hit families and schools particularly hard. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a school proprietor in Ikire recounted the chaos that unfolded around midday. "At around 1:00 PM, parents began calling frantically, demanding that their children be released from school immediately. We had no choice but to dismiss classes early. The children were terrified, and some of the younger ones were crying as they were rushed home."
The most heart-wrenching scenes emerged from a group of students reportedly sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC). One distraught mother, scanning the street for her son, broke down as she saw a crowd of young people running and shouting, "Bandits! Bandits have entered Ikire!" She cried out, "My son is writing WAEC today and he has not arrived home yet. I hope he has not been kidnapped."
Economic activities have also ground to a halt. Shops in the central markets of Apomu and Ikoyi were shuttered prematurely, and motorists diverted from routes leading toward Waasimi, exacerbating the sense of isolation and fear.
