The Muslim community in Oyo State has strongly distanced itself from a reported demand by suspected bandits for the implementation of Sharia law as a condition for the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
Religious leaders, scholars, and community representatives described the demand as a gross misrepresentation of Islam, stressing that the criminal activities allegedly carried out by the abductors are fundamentally inconsistent with Islamic teachings and the principles of Sharia law.
The controversy emerged following reports that the kidnappers, who abducted pupils, students, and teachers in parts of Oyo State, demanded that authorities adopt Sharia law alongside other conditions for the release of their captives. The demand has since generated widespread reactions across the state and beyond.
In a statement issued by the Muslim Community of Oyo State, the group condemned the actions of the abductors and rejected any attempt to associate Islam with kidnapping, terrorism, or extortion.
The statement noted that Islam upholds justice, peace, human dignity, and the sanctity of life, adding that those involved in violent crimes do not represent the Muslim faith or the wider Muslim community in Oyo State.
Islamic scholars who commented on the development explained that under Islamic jurisprudence, crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, hostage-taking, and terrorising innocent citizens are regarded as grave offences. They noted that such acts fall under serious criminal categories that attract severe punishment in classical Islamic legal traditions.
According to the scholars, the abduction of innocent civilians, particularly children and educators, directly violates core objectives of Islamic law, which include the protection of life, intellect, property, family, and public security. They argued that disrupting education through violence undermines one of the key values promoted by Islam.
The scholars further stated that demanding ransom payments for the release of abducted persons constitutes unlawful acquisition of wealth and is prohibited under Islamic teachings. They maintained that extortion, coercion, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals have no legitimate place within the framework of Sharia.
Community leaders also emphasised that Islamic teachings prohibit the spread of fear, violence, and social disorder. They pointed out that attacks on communities, destruction of property, and the intimidation of innocent citizens contradict the principles of justice and compassion that form the foundation of the religion.
One Islamic scholar, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said the criminals were attempting to cloak their activities in religious language despite engaging in conduct that directly opposes Islamic values.
He stated that genuine implementation of Sharia law would not justify kidnapping, hostage-taking, or acts of terror, but would instead hold perpetrators accountable for such crimes.
Meanwhile, security agencies continue efforts to secure the release of remaining victims and strengthen operations aimed at combating kidnapping and banditry in affected areas of Oyo State.
Religious leaders have urged members of the public not to equate the actions of criminal groups with the teachings of Islam, stressing that the faith does not condone violence against innocent people or the use of religion to advance criminal agendas.
