TENSION ON THE BORDER: CAMEROONIAN TROOPS WITHDRAW FROM NIGERIAN COMMUNITY AFTER LEVY DISPUTE

A potentially explosive cross-border incident was defused over the weekend as Cameroonian soldiers withdrew from the Nigerian community of Danare following a tense confrontation with local youths. The incident, which has sparked fresh debate over the handling of foreign military incursions, occurred near a Catholic church in the border settlement.

According to multiple security sources and eyewitness accounts, the clash was triggered by a dispute over farmland levies. Local farmers alleged that Cameroonian gendarmes had crossed into Nigerian territory to collect unauthorized taxes on agricultural land, a practice that has long been a source of friction along the poorly demarcated border. When youths confronted the foreign troops, the situation escalated, forcing a rapid response from Nigerian security forces.

The Nigerian Army confirmed that prompt military intervention led to the withdrawal of the Cameroonian personnel. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was triggered by a dispute over the collection of levies on farmland located between Danare Community (Nigeria) and Dadi Community (Cameroon),” an official statement read. Authorities in Cross River State have launched a full investigation and are engaging with their Cameroonian counterparts to establish clear operational protocols and prevent future violations.

Why No Arrests? The Legal Dilemma

The incident has left many Nigerians asking why the Cameroonian soldiers were simply allowed to withdraw rather than arrested and prosecuted. Comparisons have been drawn to the recent detention of 11 Nigerian soldiers in Burkina Faso, who were held after their aircraft made a forced landing.

Legal experts explain that the two situations are fundamentally different. The Cameroonian soldiers’ actions – while provocative – fall into a grey zone of a cross-border administrative dispute rather than a clear criminal act like armed robbery or murder. Under international law, arresting foreign military personnel on sovereign territory is a severe diplomatic act that risks armed escalation. Consequently, Nigeria is pursuing the standard protocol: a formal diplomatic protest, joint border commission meetings, and administrative clarification of boundary lines.

Authorities have assured residents that they are committed to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity. However, the lack of arrests has frustrated local youths who feel that foreign troops act with impunity. “If our soldiers can be detained in Burkina Faso, why can’t we arrest theirs?” one community leader asked.

The Nigerian government has reiterated that it is working with Cameroon to demark the border fully and establish a joint monitoring mechanism. For now, calm has returned to Danare, but the incident has underscored the fragile nature of security along the nation’s porous eastern frontier.
