THE LEAKING ROOF – WHY NO ROOM IN NIGERIA’S HOUSE IS DRY ANYMORE

For years, Nigerians were told to avoid the attic. Stay away from the North-West, they said. Keep clear of Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna – that is where the bandits live. But like a leaking roof after a relentless downpour, the water has found every crack, every corner, and every supposedly safe chamber of the national house. The bitter editorial truth today is that no state, no city, and no community in Nigeria can honestly claim immunity from banditry attacks.

Banditry, once a rural menace confined to forested enclaves, has mutated into a hydra-headed terror. Its anatomy is no longer predictable. It is no longer about cattle rustlers clashing with farmers in the bush. Today, bandits strike on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, kidnap train passengers, invade military camps, and extract ransom from the suburbs of the Federal Capital Territory. If the seat of power shudders under their shadow, what hope for the rest?

Consider the geography of recent attacks. In the South-East, separatist violence often mingles with criminal banditry, but the modus operandi is identical: mass abduction, torched vehicles, and communities held hostage. In the South-West, once praised for relative calm, forests in Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti now harbour bandit cells. Farmers in Oke-Ogun have stopped going to their fields. In the South-South, kidnappers have rebranded with bandit tactics, shutting down entire local government areas in Rivers and Delta. Even the North-Central, including Benue and Nasarawa, suffers daily from armed herders and bandits who dictate who farms, who sleeps, and who lives.

The Nigerian military is not idle – it cannot be. Operations such as FANSAN YAMMA and HADARIN DAJI have recorded successes. But the bandits adapt faster than doctrine changes. They exploit porous borders, illegal arms flows, and the deep resentment of impoverished youth who see banditry as the only upwardly mobile career. More troubling, intelligence reports suggest bandits now share tactics with terrorists, meaning no single security architecture can predict their next move.

Why is nowhere safe? Because the logic of banditry is now a franchise. Any remote community with valuable citizens, any highway with travelling families, any school with children seeking education is a target. Ransom has become a multi-billion-naira economy, incentivizing further attacks. And as long as the state does not decisively crush the sanctuaries where bandits plan and rest, the rain will keep leaking through every roof – from the palace of an Emir to a primary school in the East.

This is not alarmism. It is a call to abandon the false comfort of regional safety. No Nigerian should believe that because bandits haven’t struck their street today, they won’t strike tomorrow. The roof is leaking across all rooms. Until the government patches it with serious political will, community policing, and economic opportunity, the only safe place in Nigeria will be a prayer mat. And even that, unfortunately, is not bulletproof.
